Credentials matter!

By John K. Wisniewski

BCMS CEO/Executive Director

One of BCMS's unique services is BCVI: Bexar Credentials Verification Inc.

Through coordination and community hospital collaboration, many duplicative tasks and costs of granting hospital privileges can be avoided by using BCVI's services.

While it's crucial for you or your staff to respond promptly to information requests received from BCVI, you also are welcome to proactively submit updates to licensure or other information at any time.

This would be a good week to be sure that your credentialing coordinator is aware of this option.  If there are any questions, call 301-4370.

BCVI recently was granted recertification by the National Committee for Quality Assurance.  I'm pleased to announce that this process involved a detailed review of 75 files and the surveyors noted ZERO exceptions.

Congratulations to BCVI director of operations

Mary Jo Quinn, her very capable staff, and all the hospital and physician participants that contribute to this successful effort.

¡Por Vida! is a restaurant recognition program that helps adults and children make healthier food choices by identifying those menu items that meet nutritional guidelines developed by the Healthy Restaurants Coalition.

In January 2009, the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District, the San Antonio Restaurant Association and the San Antonio Dietetic Association joined forces to develop the Healthy Restaurants Coalition.

In 2010, the HRC launched the ¡Por Vida! program, a menu labeling and recognition program for food service establishments that offers healthy menu items.

The nutritional criteria, developed by the San Antonio Dietetic Association, are based on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The criteria establish clear limits for calories, total fat, saturated fat, trans fat and sodium.

The ¡Por Vida! program currently has 17 participating partners, which include area restaurants and institutions such as LifeCare Hospital, Morningside Ministries, UTSA, Trinity University, Security Service Federal Credit Union and University Hospital. The expansion to healthcare settings, schools and worksite cafeterias has given the program the opportunity to reach more people in San Antonio.

Currently, The ¡Por Vida! program is continuing to expand to new restaurants and institutions to create more healthy options for the community.
