Legislative Update

Tobacco 21 and Telemedicine heard in public hearing

By Mary E. Nava, MBA
BCMS Chief Government Affairs Officer

Last Tuesday, March 28, the House Committee on Public Health held its weekly hearing at the Capitol and among the bills up for public testimony were two TMA priority bills:  HB 1908 by Rep. John Zerwas, MD (R-Richmond), which would raise the age to use tobacco from 18 to 21 and HB 2697 by Rep. Four Price (R-Amarillo), which would help patients by defining telemedical care as medical care that should meet the same standards of care as an in-person visit.  HB 1908 is also a priority bill for the Texas Public Health Coalition, of which BCMS is a member.  In addition, San Antonio is well-represented on the House Public Health Committee with two representatives from our city:  Rep. Philip Cortez (District 117) and Rep. Diana Arevalo (District 116).  As your representative in Austin, I attended the hearing and dropped cards in support of these bills, which also registered BCMS as being in support of these bills as well.

For local discussion on these and other legislative advocacy topics of the 85th Legislative Session, consider joining the BCMS Legislative and Socioeconomics Committee by contacting me at mary.nava@bcms.org.

TMA member Tom Kim, MD, from Austin stands before the House Public Health Committee to provide testimony in support of HB 2697 on March 28.
