Call for Nominations: The John P. McGovern Award
In 1993, the 78 year old Houston Academy of Medicine, a 6,000 member professional organization, inaugurated a special annual award named in honor of its first recipient, John P. McGovern, MD, ScD. The purpose of this award is to identify and recognize multi-accomplished physicians who have enriched the field of medicine with excellence and humaneness. Read more or check out the nomination information here.

CDC Revises Universal Masking in Health Facilities
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention no longer recommends universal masking in health care settings, unless the facilities are in areas of high COVID-19 transmission. The CDC’s new guidance says, “Updates were made to reflect the high levels of vaccine-and infection-induced immunity and the availability of effective treatments and prevention tools.” Continue reading

“Rainbow” Fentanyl-Related Overdoses Among Youth Trigger DEA, DSHS Warnings
In the wake of a series of overdoses and deaths in Hays County, Texas public health and federal law enforcement agencies have released advisories about multicolored or “rainbow” fentanyl. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) warns the colors could lead children to mistake them for candy and make them more appealing to young people. Read more

CDC Data Shows an Increase in Respiratory Infections that Can Lead to Paralysis in Children
There was an increase in acute respiratory illnesses and emergency department visits driven by rhinovirus and enterovirus in children and adolescents this summer, new CDC data shows. The rise might be more specifically attributed to enterovirus D68, which, in rare cases, can lead to acute flaccid myelitis, or AFM. Read more 

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month
October marks the beginning of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month and start of the Purple Porch SA campaign. For the month of October we are asking everyone to switch out their porch light(s) with purple bulbs and/or decorate their porch purple to raise awareness about domestic violence.
