FDA Approves First Oral Antiviral Drug for COVID-19
The FDA has granted full approval to nirmatrelvir-ritonavir (Paxlovid) for treating adult outpatients with mild to moderate COVID-19 who are at risk for severe disease, the agency has announced. The agency further stipulated that nirmatrelvir-ritonavir is not intended for use as a preventive therapy either pre- or post-exposure to COVID (i.e./ patients should have symptoms and a confirmed case before use). Continue reading

Physicians' DEA Registration Now Requires Training on Substance Use Disorder
Starting June 27, physicians must attest to completing eight hours of substance-abuse training when they register for or renew their Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) license. Physicians won't have to submit training-related documentation but should be able to reference it in the event of an audit. There are plenty of options – including CME from TMA. Read more

New TMA Policy Recognizes People With Disabilities as Health Disparity Population
New Texas Medical Association policy recognizes people with disabilities as a "health disparity population" for the first time, a move designed to improve care for those who are often inadvertently overlooked or excluded in medical settings. It was just one of several important policy changes the House of Delegates made in public health at TexMed 2023. Read more

TDI DWC Seeks Stakeholder Input for Spinal Cord Stimulator Audit
DWC is looking for input for the Spinal Cord Stimulator Plan-Based Audit. The audit will evaluate the appropriateness of a doctor's decision and recordkeeping that support the use and effectiveness of spinal cord stimulators. The audit sets the scope, methodology, selection standards, and program area duties laid out in the Medical Quality Review Process. For more information
